Coraline's Closet: The How-To Guide

Image
Welcome to my last AP for Endurance. During this class, we learned about different individuals who physically and mentally endured challenges in order to survive or reach a goal. For our AP, we had to create a survival guide or how-to manual on something we see ourselves taking on and challenging ourselves with in the future. I choose to write my how-to guide about starting a clothing brand. I choose this as my topic because it is something I am really passionate about and could possibly see myself doing in the near future. I feel that I would have a lot of challenges if I were to take on this mission. After creating this guide, I can see that with the proper training and support I will excel. I am happy with how this project turned out. I hope that whoever reads this manual can learn something new. This is also my last AP for GCE. I am honored that it was from such a great class and project. Have a safe summer! CH. "Coraline's Closet." Canva logos, 2022. CH. "Surviv...

Space Debris Science Conference

Image
Welcome to the third action project for my STEAM class, Frontiers. This class is about exploration. This project connects directly to my second action project, Space Junk . For this action project, I had to create a poster based on a research paper I created this term. I choose my most recent paper on space exploration. In this paper, I choose to focus on space debris and how this affects space exploration. This poster summarizes my research paper.  CH."Space Debris Poster." Google Slides, 2022. I enjoyed completing this poster. I have a great interest in space, so putting together this poster was fun for me. I believed I have managed my time well with this project as I did include the feedback given to me by my teacher.

Work Your Worries Out

Welcome to my first AP for Endurance. During this class, we learned about the holocaust and visited the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie. We also read the book called ¨Night¨. We also watched ¨Schindlers List¨. While reading this book and watching the movie, we learned about the different ways people endured during the holocaust. We also learned about Laura Dekker. She was the youngest person to sail around the world by herself. For our AP, we had to come up with an idea of something we could endure or complete in 12 hours. I choose to challenge my social anxiety and go to the gym for those 12 hours. During this time I was also challenging the way I felt about my body and tried to push myself to grow.  Guiding Question: How do I adapt while faced with social anxiety in unfamiliar social settings? Transform: A Safe Space for All

Image
Welcome to my action project for my Social Entrepreneurship class. During this second unit we learned about businesses and how to create one. We created our own business models, vision and mission statements, marketing plans, and tried to create social change with our business plan. We learned how to essentially create a successful business. We where visited by Sharon Cho and Felicia(GCE's fundraiser) to learn more about what it takes to create and run a social entrepreneurship. For this AP we where tasked with our own social entrepreneurship. Using all of the data and information I collected over the past few weeks, I was able to compile a presentation to present my business idea. In the end I decided to create an LLC and eventually a non-profit that will offer free digital mental health services to LGBTQ+ youth.  CH. "Transform." Google Slides, 2022. Overall, I really enjoyed this project. I got to think about a social change I could create in the world. It was challeng...

Warning: a zine on women's health

Welcome to my first action project for my humanities class Equality. In this first unit, history, we defined equality and looked at the inequalities between races throughout history. We learned about different theories on race from Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, James Baldwin, and Peggy McIntosh. We also looked at the inequalities between genders and focused on sexism between men and women. While focusing on gender we looked at material from Simone de Beauvoir and Betty Friedman. Lastly, we defined class and the inequalities within the class relations in the USA. While focusing on class relations we read material from Bell Hooks, The Communist Manifesto, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau on inequality. During class, we took a field experience to see an art exhibit displaying pieces by Robert Colescott. During this FE we learned how to look at history from a different perspective and how to reimagine many things common in today's culture. We also met with Allegra...

No More Loans!

C.H. "Need to Know." Google Slides, 2021. 4yrs at UChicago Original Loan: $281,802.00 Total Time: 60 years, I will be 82 years old Total paid: $983,212.22 2 years at Wright College then transfer to UChicago Original Loan: $126,661.72 Total time: 30 years, I will be 52 years old Total paid: $286,879.76 This AP has helped show me how important it is to get financial aid and scholarships for college to help with the college costs. I am someone who is very conscious about what I do with my money, so having to pay off a student loan for most of my adult life actually scares me. I would rather put in the hard work now and reap the benefits later in life when I am then financially stable. Both of these paths are options for me, but I highly recommend getting a scholarship and financial aid. I like setting myself up for success.

Trust the Trusses

This is the first Action Project (AP) for my STEAM class Urban Planning. In this first unit, we learned about the law of sines and cosines, the 7 ancient wonders of the world, free body diagrams, bridges, gravity, and Newton's Laws. For this unit's field experience, our teacher walked around downtown Chicago and showed our class the DuSable bridge, the river walk, and lower wacker virtually. For this AP, we were tasked with making truss bridges with a maximum of 60 popsicle sticks and a bottle of Elmer's Glue. One struggle I had with this project was getting the two truss sides of the bridge to stay together. To fix this I had to think of creative ways to keep my bridge up while I glued them together. CH. Piano in the Park?

Image
During my three-week Civic Term course called "Music that Matters". We learned about music that has helped to teach, inspire, and ignite. During this course, we had three guests virtually talk to the class. Our guests Faiz Razi, Conan Neutron, and Fransisco Ramirez are active people in the music community and they talked to us about music and why it matters to them. For this action project, we were asked to create a proposal for My Block, My Hood, My City. Their newest project asks, "How can you make a positive impact on your neighborhood?"  I am proposing a giant interactive musical experience. I want to install a giant piano keyboard into the ground so that the community can interact with it. The piano will be playable and light up when the keys are pressed. I want to create it so that people could also pick from a list of songs and play them on the piano. When the songs are played the piano keys will light up in beat with the song. The music for this installation...

Lite Bike

For our second unit of Design and Engineering, we had to finish this term by designing a bike that would fit the persona given to us by our teacher. We had to design a bike using empathy. We learned about designing with empathy in our last unit. In this unit, we learned about speed conversions, gear ratios, Newton's laws, energy, derivatives, and we learned a lot about the volume and area of 2D and 3D shapes.  We met virtually with a representative from Divvy to learn about the program that they have in Chicago and how they believe it is helping our communities. We went to a bike shop called Earth Rider to learn more about e-bikes and how they work. I worked with another student to complete this project, here I have attached the link to their blog post .  Our persona lives in Banff, Canada, and has to travel 3 miles to school every day. They have to travel along winding roads and it is often cold. They have to carry their school books during this ride to and from school. They ...

Photojournalism IS

Image
I have been interested in photography for a long time. I like the way that pictures seem to capture a moment that can never be recreated that same way again. I like the way that photographs are able to play with perspective and lighting. During this independent study, I learned how to shoot in manual mode. I learned a lot about aperture, ISO, and shutter speed and how these components play a big role in taking a picture. During this IS, I also practiced shooting with perspective. My goal was to learn different photography techniques, and use those techniques to create a portfolio of pictures that depict the current climate that our world lives in. I do not think that I have met this goal. I believe that I still have a lot to learn and work on. The pictures I collected for my portfolio are things that are important to me or that I enjoy. I will definitely be continuing my photography journey throughout high school. I want to practice my photography skills around my neighborhood and when...

an Extra - Arm

Image
In this unit Design and Engineering, we learned about levers, wedges, and tools. The project is asking us to create our own garden tool that is more accessible to senior citizens. The user is senior citizens and what makes them unique is that as people get older, gardening becomes a much more difficult task. Gardening becomes more difficult to them due to the decline in vision, failing manual dexterity, and difficulty stooping and lifting. Empathy relates to this project because if you want to design a tool that senior citizens can actually use, designing with empathy is the way to go. Empathy is when you put yourself in someone else's to try to understand how they are feeling. I learned that high quality and useful gardening tools are often expensive. The gardener I interviewed told me that she "sees gardening as a relaxing and meditation activity." The tools that my gardener found ineffective were the ones that, over time, had grips that could hurt the user's hand. ...

Are You There Margaret?

Image
Blume. "Book Cover." 1970. This is an action project for my core class Forbidden Books. In this unit we have been learning about diversity, gender roles, and studied the banning of books. For our action project we had to create a research paper that outlined why the books where banned, who banned it, and then we had to take a stance on the book and discuss whether we thought the book should or  should not be banned. The banned book I choose was Are You There God? It's Me Margaret. by Judy Blume. I hope you enjoy hearing my stance on this book and enjoy reading my research paper!  CH. "Research Paper." 2020.

Patient B

In my STEAM class, Cure, this has definitely been an interesting unit to learn through e-learning. We studied the Hippocratic oath and the difference between a doctor and a healer. We learned about cell's, mitosis and meiosis, and practiced conic sections. We took virtual FE's and spoke with Dr. Neeraj Jain, a doctor who specializes in pain medicine at Hinsdale hospital. As well as Kellee Athens, who is very knowledgeable about the Zika Pandemic. For this AP we were tasked with choosing a surgery and studying it very thoroughly. We had to explain a person that had has had this surgery performed, and how there organs, tissues, and cells were affected by the surgery. I choose a Hip Arthroscopy because it is a procedure were I have easy access many things that I could use as my primary sources. I believe that is what makes this project and this procedure super interesting. CH. "Slideshow." 2020 In conclusion, this was definitely both a challenging and interesting project...

Biscuits on the Rise

In unit two of our Food class, we learned all about baking, pH scales, and. During our unit, we visited Big Delicious Planet where we got to take a look at their garden which is where they get some of their food and we also got to take a look at their kitchen where everything is prepped, stored and shipped off to wherever it needs to be. We also went to a homeless shelter and talked to the main baker that would cook for over 500 people a day. For our AP we had to take a biscuit recipe and substitute one of the ingredients for a completely different ingredient. We then had to observe what changes happened between our original(controlled) recipe and experimental recipe. I hope you enjoy and learn more about baking within this AP. CH. Why should I learn about Art?

Image
10 reasons why the arts in schools is so important: Working in the arts helps learners to develop creative problem-solving skills. Teaching through the arts can present difficult concepts visually, making them more easy to understand. Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness. Visual arts teach learners about color, layout, perspective, and balance all techniques that are necessary for presentations (visual, digital) of academic work. Integrating art with other disciplines reaches students who might not otherwise be engaged in classwork. Arts experiences boost critical thinking, teaching students to take the time to be more careful and thorough in how they observe the world. The arts provide challenges for learners at all levels. Art education connects students with their own culture as well as with the wider world. A report by Americans for the Arts states that yo...

Electric Cars are Lit

My current STEAM class this term is called "Fuel". In this class, we are focusing on renewable and nonrenewable energy. We have learned a lot about different types of energies sources like coal, oil, and natural gas just to name a few. We also focused on the periodic table, balancing chemical equations, and the equations for power and work. For our most recent FE, we went to a Tesla dealership in Chicago. We learned why the tesla salesmen believed Tesla was the best car, specifically electric car on the market. So my STEAM teacher decided that for our AP, we had to create an infomercial that shows why the viewer should choose the renewable energy over the non-renewable energy. For my two forms of power, I choose Electric Cars versus Gas Cars. Below I have included my infomercial, along with my slideshow. I hope you enjoy my project on renewable and non-renewable fuel! In conclusion, I believe you should choose an electric car as your next mode of transportation! It i...

Can Fuel be Crude?

My current STEAM class this term is called "Fuel". In this class, we are focusing on energy. We have learned a lot about different types of energies like coal, oil, and natural gas just to name a few. We revisited how to graph, find slope, y-intercept, and how to make predictions based on the given information. We also learned about elements atomic mass, weight, the symbol of an element in the periodic table, its group, and period. We had an FE guest come in and talk to us about fuel and energy. Our FE guest was from NicorGas company. She explained to us the different types of fuel, both renewable and non-renewable. She explained how we got gas and heat to our house. I believe that the FE guest helped me deepen my understanding of some of the fuels. To end the first unit of "Fuel"; my teacher has asked that every student produce a slideshow. The slideshow must include the oil productions of two different countries over a span of three decades. I chose to compare t...

Eco-Polish

For my final AP, I was looking into how long it takes Nail Polish to decompose. The information I got back was quite surprising. Creating a closed loop system for a common product was very interesting. Continue reading to learn more about the effect Nail Polish has on the environment, and how we could change that. This concludes my project on creating a closed loop system for nail polish. This was a cool project because I got to think outside the box and about an item I use constantly. It was very eye-opening for me and I hope I can pitch this sustainable product in the future. Pouch Palace & Speedster 2.0

In Unit 2 of my STEAM course, Biomimicry, our class was based on animals. Throughout this course, we looked into different animal adaptations that influenced the design to solve real-world problems. While looking into the adaptations, we also looked into different animal architects that create structures for themselves to help them in their habitats. For this AP, we were asked to choose two different animals, and create two structures. One for housing and one for transportation influenced by the animals of your choice. I chose the Kangaroo and the Cheetah. Within my project, you will see how I incorporated the adaptations from these animals to create two unique designs. In conclusion, I found that we should be looking deeper into animals forms and processes. We should figure out what purposes they serve in the environment that they are found in. I found many types of animal architecture dedicated to protecting their young against the elements. We should be thin...

Fun in the Sun

One of my classes is called Biomimicry. Biomimicry means mimicking life, in this context, it is humans learning about the ways other species of animals and plants solve problems, then applying it within our own society.  For instance, Velcro is a man-made material that is very useful. Many people do not know that that Velcro was actually inspired by a plant called Burdock, most commonly known as a bur plant.  This is just one of the many revolutionary inventions inspired by nature. In my class, we also went on experience to talk to people within a company called Interface. My class learned that this company uses sustainable practices to reduce their carbon footprint and waste in the world. Interface also took patterns from nature to design their carpet patterns, this is a form of biomimicry. For my action project, we had to choose a plant, study the features of that certain plant, and then create something inspired by what we found. I chose the Cypress Trees, they are very com...
