Drawing Lines

During my three-week Civic Term course called “Drawing Lines”, we focused on trying to define what public art is. Throughout this course, I saw public art through touring different areas of Chicago such as the Downtown Loop, Pilsen, and Wicker Park. We met with people and organizations such as Nathan Mason from Chicago’s Cultural Center, Katanya from Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning , and the Chicago Public Art Group . We studied public art by becoming tour guides in the neighborhoods of Lincoln Park, Downtown Loop, Pilsen, and Wicker Park. We mapped out routes through these different areas. We watched, broke down, and discussed the movie, Style Wars. It's a movie about how graffiti writing and tagging came into existence through hip hop and break dancing influences. The biggest takeaway from this course is the work we did with Rich Alapack of " We All Live Here ". He has a mural saying his infamous phrase all throughout Chicago's 77 neighborhoods. Recently,

Coraline's Closet: The How-To Guide

Image
Welcome to my last AP for Endurance. During this class, we learned about different individuals who physically and mentally endured challenges in order to survive or reach a goal. For our AP, we had to create a survival guide or how-to manual on something we see ourselves taking on and challenging ourselves with in the future. I choose to write my how-to guide about starting a clothing brand. I choose this as my topic because it is something I am really passionate about and could possibly see myself doing in the near future. I feel that I would have a lot of challenges if I were to take on this mission. After creating this guide, I can see that with the proper training and support I will excel. I am happy with how this project turned out. I hope that whoever reads this manual can learn something new. This is also my last AP for GCE. I am honored that it was from such a great class and project. Have a safe summer! CH. "Coraline's Closet." Canva logos, 2022. CH. "Surviv

Space Debris Science Conference

Welcome to the third action project for my STEAM class, Frontiers. This class is about exploration. This project connects directly to my second action project, Space Junk . For this action project, I had to create a poster based on a research paper I created this term. I choose my most recent paper on space exploration. In this paper, I choose to focus on space debris and how this affects space exploration. This poster summarizes my research paper.  CH."Space Debris Poster." Google Slides, 2022. I enjoyed completing this poster. I have a great interest in space, so putting together this poster was fun for me. I believed I have managed my time well with this project as I did include the feedback given to me by my teacher.

Space Junk

Welcome to the second action project for my STEAM class, Frontiers. This class is about exploration. During this second unit, my class focused on space exploration. We went on a field experience at the Adler Planetarium and learned about the timeline of the universe. We also spoke virtually with a graduate student named  An Li who is focusing on getting her Ph.D. in space studies. For my action project, I had to write a research paper about a challenge that we face during space exploration. I choose to focus on space debris and how this affects space exploration.  Space Debris: the litter in Earth's orbit CBS News. ¨Space Junk.¨ The growing population of space debris has made it increasingly difficult to execute space missions. In response to this problem, there is a global consensus that space activities need to be carefully monitored to reduce the risk of adding to the current amount of debris within Earth's orbit. There is currently no global collective effort for current sp

Work Your Worries Out

Welcome to my first AP for Endurance. During this class, we learned about the holocaust and visited the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie. We also read the book called ¨Night¨. We also watched ¨Schindlers List¨. While reading this book and watching the movie, we learned about the different ways people endured during the holocaust. We also learned about Laura Dekker. She was the youngest person to sail around the world by herself. For our AP, we had to come up with an idea of something we could endure or complete in 12 hours. I choose to challenge my social anxiety and go to the gym for those 12 hours. During this time I was also challenging the way I felt about my body and tried to push myself to grow.  Guiding Question: How do I adapt while faced with social anxiety in unfamiliar social settings? Coral Reefs: What once was a wonder of the world may disappear sooner than we think

Image
Welcome to the first action project for my STEAM class, Frontiers. This class is about exploration. During this first unit, my class focused on exploring the ocean. We watched a movie called "Becoming Cousteau", this movie is about a French explorer and sailor. We also went on a field experience to Urban Rivers and learned about riverfront restoration. This trip really helped to inform me about the different threats to bodies of water and different ways of restoration. For my action project, I had to write a research paper about a challenge that the ocean faces. I choose to focus on coral reefs and the threats that they face.

We Are All Human - a news broadcast

This is an action project for my core class Equality. In this unit, we spent our time looking at the inequalities of race, class, and gender. We took a deep dive into each subject and listened to different stories from people who have experienced inequality. We listened to a podcast by This American Life, we read stories of micro-aggressions, and we played a special type of monopoly where each person was part of a different social class and was subjected to different class rules. For example, I was lower class and I started with only five hundred dollars, while those in the upper class started with 2500 dollars. For this AP, we were tasked with envisioning a policy change in the year 2122. The policy I chose to create was globally appointing gender identity and sexual orientation as a protected class.  Script: [June 28th, 2122] Today marks the 171st anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City, NY.  This is a momentous occasion, as it marks the beginning of a global stand for a

Workshops Collide

For this term, I decided to do a joint project between Woodshop and my Digital Fabrication workshop. In Woodshop we learned how to use a miter saw, table saw, belt sander, and other various tools. In Digital Fabrication we created 3D objects and learned how to slice them. We then learned how to create an SVG and cut it out using the silhouette cutter. I new thing I learned to do was take an SVG and use it to create a carving on wood using the Carvey. This was a useful skill to learn as I had chosen to make a jewelry box in the woodshop and was struggling to find a way to decorate it.  CH. "Rip Cut." Youtube, 2022. After learning about the Carvey I wanted to carve something on almost every side of my box. This was a bit drastic as I did spend most of Digital Fabrication designing things to put on the remaining sides of the box. Before I was to permanently etch the designs in, I tested it out on a piece of scrap wood. This did not go as planned as I had very fine details and ch
