Welcome to my first action project (AP) for Unit 1 of my senior Journalism class. In this class, we learned about news literacy and how to identify if a news source is credible. We watched the movie spotlight to learn about what a journalist does when investigating a source. We also talked with Julie Wernau, a reporter at the Wall Street Journal, and learned about how we could write unbiased news pieces. To wrap up this unit we were tasked with investigating and writing a news article about something that affects our neighborhood. I chose to write my article about Mexican Independence Day which takes place annually on September 16th. This event is important to Chicago because Chicago now has the second largest population of Mexican immigrants in the United States (after Los Angeles), with around 628,000 recorded between 2014-2018, according to the Migration Policy Institute. In my Humanities class, Rhetoric, we recently finished our second unit. In this unit, we furthered our knowledge of rhetoric and the impact it can have. We studied different situations where rhetoric has been used. We focused on the literary devices used in rhetoric and how those devices have an impact on the words, their context, and the impact on the audience. We watched the vice presidential debate and studied rhetoric between now elect Vice President Kamal Harris and Vice President Mike Pence. We met with Ugo Okere, a man who was running on the ticket as a Socialist to be elected in Chicago ward 40. As a class, most of us met in-person to walk through and learn about the MLK Living Memorial in Marquette Park. To wrap up our second unit of Rhetoric, I was asked to write an Op-ed. In my STEAM course called Disease we recently finished our third unit called “World”. In this unit we focused on the spread of diseases. We studied the different classifications of diseases. We focused on the different aspects that are considered when a disease is affecting a community. We studied how epidemics affect the world. We also learned different key concepts epidemiologists use regarding the spread of diseases. For this AP we were instructed to pick a disease of our interest. We then had to study a particular outbreak of this disease from the past. The purpose of this project is to create a newspaper article that informs readers about the outbreak we chose. The article explains what caused the outbreak, how the outbreak was controlled, and what we can do to avoid an outbreak like it from happening again.
