GMOs, What are those?

Image
In the last unit of our freshman STEAM course called food, we focused on GMOs and GEs. We went on Field Experience to the Green City Market in Lincoln Park. We interviewed the vendors and the farmers from all over the Midwest and learned about their opinions on GMOs and organic crops. For this final action project, we were instructed to choose a side in the argument on GMOs. I hope you enjoy! CH. "GMOs." 2019

Is It Worth It?

The third unit of Food for Thought is called birth. We learned about the advancements in technology and researched the Industrial Revolution. We watched a movie called, "Food Inc". We read excerpts from Michael Pollen's book called, "In Defense of Food". We learned about the difference between organic and industrial food, different ways of farming to substitute for industrial farming, and the six Ayurveda tastes which relate to nutrition. We went on Field Experiences to Whole Foods where we looked at different food labels and lastly we went to Uncommon Grounds where we talked to about urban farming. For this last Action Project, we were instructed to write a food review on a meal that was restaurant cooked and homemade. We had to describe each dish using our senses and recommend which one we like more. I decided to write my reviews on Chicken Tacos. I hope you enjoy! CH. "Is It Worth It?" 2019

This term in my humanities class, we were focusing on a unit called Food for Thought. In my Food For Thought class, we are currently in Unit 2, which is called Death. We learned about the Irish Potato Famine, the Atlantic Slave Trade, and Chattel slavery. All these steps lead up to our action project, Sustainable Development Goal 2. I choose SDG 2.4, which is about making sure farms are producing food under the sustainable food, production and resilient agricultural practices. CH. "Video." 2019. CH. Biscuits on the Rise

In unit two of our Food class, we learned all about baking, pH scales, and. During our unit, we visited Big Delicious Planet where we got to take a look at their garden which is where they get some of their food and we also got to take a look at their kitchen where everything is prepped, stored and shipped off to wherever it needs to be. We also went to a homeless shelter and talked to the main baker that would cook for over 500 people a day. For our AP we had to take a biscuit recipe and substitute one of the ingredients for a completely different ingredient. We then had to observe what changes happened between our original(controlled) recipe and experimental recipe. I hope you enjoy and learn more about baking within this AP. CH. Why should I learn about Art?

Image
10 reasons why the arts in schools is so important: Working in the arts helps learners to develop creative problem-solving skills. Teaching through the arts can present difficult concepts visually, making them more easy to understand. Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness. Visual arts teach learners about color, layout, perspective, and balance all techniques that are necessary for presentations (visual, digital) of academic work. Integrating art with other disciplines reaches students who might not otherwise be engaged in classwork. Arts experiences boost critical thinking, teaching students to take the time to be more careful and thorough in how they observe the world. The arts provide challenges for learners at all levels. Art education connects students with their own culture as well as with the wider world. A report by Americans for the Arts states that yo...
