Coral Reefs: What once was a wonder of the world may disappear sooner than we think

Image
Welcome to the first action project for my STEAM class, Frontiers. This class is about exploration. During this first unit, my class focused on exploring the ocean. We watched a movie called "Becoming Cousteau", this movie is about a French explorer and sailor. We also went on a field experience to Urban Rivers and learned about riverfront restoration. This trip really helped to inform me about the different threats to bodies of water and different ways of restoration. For my action project, I had to write a research paper about a challenge that the ocean faces. I choose to focus on coral reefs and the threats that they face.

An Unjust Chicago

In my humanities class, "A Nations Argument", we recently finished our second unit called Antithesis. In this unit, we learned about logical fallacies, premises, and the difference between valid and sound arguments. We learned about life in the US after separating from Britain. We looked closely at the United States Constitution and how the amendments were first used in supreme court cases. We met virtually with public defender Connie Jordan, 27th ward Alderman Burnett, and 40th ward Alderman Vasquez. To end this unit, our teacher asked us all to amend an ordinance in the Chicago Municipal code that we believe is unjust. I picked Chicago's hate-crime ordinance.  Unjust Chicago Municipal Code: 8-4-085 Hate crimes.  (a) No person shall, by reason of any motive or intent relating to, or any antipathy, animosity or hostility based upon, the actual or perceived race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, ancestry, sexual orientation, active or prior military status, or m...

Are You There Margaret?

Blume. "Book Cover." 1970. This is an action project for my core class Forbidden Books. In this unit we have been learning about diversity, gender roles, and studied the banning of books. For our action project we had to create a research paper that outlined why the books where banned, who banned it, and then we had to take a stance on the book and discuss whether we thought the book should or  should not be banned. The banned book I choose was Are You There God? It's Me Margaret. by Judy Blume. I hope you enjoy hearing my stance on this book and enjoy reading my research paper!  CH. "Research Paper." 2020.

Take the Money - Bennie

In our class Drama, we read the play, A Raisin in the Sun. This play examined gender roles, as well as the way race played a role in our society in the past and in the current day. We also had virtual FE guests Regina Holloway and Joel Hamernick come and speak to us about restrictive covenants in Chicago and how specific laws were put in place to keep black families out of white neighborhoods.  In the play, Mama has bought a new house in an all white neighborhood. Mr. Linder, the "welcoming committee" from this neighborhood is trying to get the Younger family to sell the house back to the community. For our action project, I have written a letter to Walter Younger to convince him on whether he should or should not sell the house to Mr. Linder. I decided to write the letter from the view of Beneatha. This letter is directed to Walter who has the final decision of whether the house is sold or not. I hope this letter can show you why Walter should sell the house to Mr. Linder.  ...

Earth 2.0

In my STEAM course, we currently have a class called Fuel. During this unit, we have been learning about inequalities, the carbon cycle, the laws of conservation of energy, and balancing chemical equations. Throughout this class, I have learned a lot about different sources and types of fuel and energy. We went on an FE where we walked around schools nieghborhood and looked for different forms of pollution. Currently, the definition of pollution is any substance is in the wrong place or concentration in the environment. Throughout this unit, I have learned there is a lot more "invisible" pollution affecting our earth. For this Action Project, we had to talk about a plan for possibly reducing our carbon footprints. Hope you enjoy my essay! CH. "Essay." 2019

Sweet Dreams

In my humanities class, we had a unit called Who Am I? This unit was focusing on truth, memory, doubts, and dreams. This project specifically focuses on doubts and dreams. We visited the Art Institute of Chicago to learn about different surrealist artists from the early 18th and 19th centuries. We interpreted their reasoning behind their art piece. We also visited the American Indian Center in Albany Park to learn about the history behind dreamcatchers, the Ojibwe, and cultural appropriation. For this action project, my teacher asked us to create a dreamcatcher that symbolizes something personal to each of us. We had to connect it back to what we learned throughout this unit. I hope you enjoy it!     CH. "Sweet Dreams, Issuu." 2019 In conclusion, I learned a lot during this AP. I learned about the Ojibwe culture around dreamcatchers and the Great Spider. As well as the theories of many psychologists. This helped me explore what within my life has he...

Women's Wave Chicago 2019

What can we do as citizens to peacefully create change? This is the question that we tried to answer in the final unit of our Humanities class, Global Peace. We studied different ways to analyze and understand violence, looking at real examples and applying them to our own lives. By studying famous peacemakers, such as Sharp and Gandhi, we learned many different strategies for peaceful change and were able to better understand famous protests and movements. For our Action Project, our goal was to start or participate in our own peaceful protest. I chose to focus on the efforts being made by the organization Women's March, dedicated to fighting bigotry and discrimination in all their forms — including homophobia and antisemitism — and to lift up the voices of women who are too often left out.

Flood, Joe.  “David Hogg at the White House Correspondents  Dinner.”  Flickr, Yahoo!, 29 Apr. 2018. In my Global Peace class, we looked into Gandhi's principles. The first Gandhian principle was Sarvodaya, the uplift of all. We looked into Swadeshi, which is looking particularly on the local economy. Swaraj looked deep into self-government. This means to work for yourself, and making your own decisions before making communal ones. Lastly, we looked into Satyagraha. This means finding the truth in something that already exists, or finding the truth in resistance. These principles are important to an activist. In order to create your own "perfect" world, you must be able to follow these principles according to Gandhi. To further our knowledge of Gandhi's principles, we were asked to choose an activist that has used at least one of these principles. I choose to focus on David Hogg. Throughout my research paper, you will see examples that make Hogg an activist....

We the People, Free the People

In my freshman humanities class, we are learning about the 17 Sustainable Development goals created by the United nations. (Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.) At the end of the first term, we chose one of the seventeen goals that we wanted to focus on. We had to research why that goal exists, and what it does for us today. We had to refer this all back to a country, whether it is upholding that goal or not. I choose Australia to compare and contrast the standards for Sustainable Development Goal number 16. I also learned many global facts about SDG number 16. This includes the progress that has been made, the current state of this issue, and the things that regular people can do to help achieve this goal. "At least 1,019 human rights defenders and journalists have been killed in 61 countries since 2015." (UN) Many places in the world still experience multiple forms of violence. In many place...

Art en Espana

Image

Love is Love is Love

The USA and the Netherlands both are very similar countries. They consist of a Democracy, with elected officials, and a constitution with amendments that help make up the law. But both citizens in these countries have very different experiences. In my freshman humanities class, we looked at the difference and similarities between sex and gender. We’ve met with many people and visited institutions to get a better understanding of the issues of gender equality. We met with Professor Hewitt from Oakton Community College, and Scout from the Chicago Women's Health Center. We visited the Center on Halsted. Throughout this entire unit we discussed how we see equality and inequality in our lives, and where we commonly see gender inequalities within and throughout media and social media. After going on a field experience, we took time to reflect and understand the information so that we too could build our own views on this issue. What stood out to me was the evolution of the amendment and ...

Housing SHOULD be a human right!

Image
During my first Humanities class, during freshman year. We learned about the sustainable development goals set by the united nations. We focused on goal one, no poverty. Goal two, zero hunger. Goal three, quality education. We took a trip to the Lincoln Park Community Shelter to learn about the effects of the limited resources in our neighborhood. We then cooked them lunch to show gratitude and thanks for allowing us to enter into the community that they have formed. My end unit project is focusing on ending extreme poverty and whether adequate shelter, health care, and free primary and secondary school should be a human right. Each year, the homeless costs the government almost $50,000 per person, according to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. That is more spent per person than some people below the poverty line make. People should not have to endure a life of poverty. They should have the human right to adequate shelter, health care, and free prima...

LIFE IS WATER; When You Conserve Water, You Conserve Life!

Image
My nearest water source is 3.36 miles away, that would take me an hour and ten minutes to walk to the river to collect water. It would take me about 3 and 30 minutes to walk back with more than 3 gallons of water in my hands. It would take 3 times as long if I was carrying water. I calculated this by taking the time it took to walk from our school to the river without water, and then I compared it to the time walking from the river to the school with water. When we did not have water, it took 6 minutes to walk from school to the river. When we did have water, it took us 18 minutes which is three times as long walking without water. The average person in the USA uses 152 gallons a day. That is 575 liters and is equal to 1267.68 pounds. The average person in the UK uses 150 liters a day. That is about 40 gallons and is equal to 333.6 pounds. Many people think that the UK has a lot of different places and a lot of different people. But after studying the water usage of people all ove...
