Coraline's Closet: The How-To Guide

Image
Welcome to my last AP for Endurance. During this class, we learned about different individuals who physically and mentally endured challenges in order to survive or reach a goal. For our AP, we had to create a survival guide or how-to manual on something we see ourselves taking on and challenging ourselves with in the future. I choose to write my how-to guide about starting a clothing brand. I choose this as my topic because it is something I am really passionate about and could possibly see myself doing in the near future. I feel that I would have a lot of challenges if I were to take on this mission. After creating this guide, I can see that with the proper training and support I will excel. I am happy with how this project turned out. I hope that whoever reads this manual can learn something new. This is also my last AP for GCE. I am honored that it was from such a great class and project. Have a safe summer! CH. "Coraline's Closet." Canva logos, 2022. CH. "Surviv...

Work Your Worries Out

Welcome to my first AP for Endurance. During this class, we learned about the holocaust and visited the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie. We also read the book called ¨Night¨. We also watched ¨Schindlers List¨. While reading this book and watching the movie, we learned about the different ways people endured during the holocaust. We also learned about Laura Dekker. She was the youngest person to sail around the world by herself. For our AP, we had to come up with an idea of something we could endure or complete in 12 hours. I choose to challenge my social anxiety and go to the gym for those 12 hours. During this time I was also challenging the way I felt about my body and tried to push myself to grow.  Guiding Question: How do I adapt while faced with social anxiety in unfamiliar social settings? Warning: a zine on women's health

Welcome to my first action project for my humanities class Equality. In this first unit, history, we defined equality and looked at the inequalities between races throughout history. We learned about different theories on race from Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, James Baldwin, and Peggy McIntosh. We also looked at the inequalities between genders and focused on sexism between men and women. While focusing on gender we looked at material from Simone de Beauvoir and Betty Friedman. Lastly, we defined class and the inequalities within the class relations in the USA. While focusing on class relations we read material from Bell Hooks, The Communist Manifesto, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau on inequality. During class, we took a field experience to see an art exhibit displaying pieces by Robert Colescott. During this FE we learned how to look at history from a different perspective and how to reimagine many things common in today's culture. We also met with Allegra...

Make Your Mark

Welcome to my AP for Journalism. In this unit, we focused on photojournalism. We learned about the functions of a camera and core parts of photography like aperture and shutter speed. We spoke with Caleb Hammernick, a professional photographer and photography teacher. We also talked about the book 'Our America: Life and Death on the South Side of Chicago'. We focused on the key parts of Lloyd and LeAlan's interviews for their book. While reading this chapter we searched for our definition of the meaning of life. Now for our AP, we are tasked with interviewing someone and documenting their meaning of life. I hope you enjoy this post and that my project helps you in your own search for your true meaning of life.  --------------------------------------------------------- Make Your Mark What is the meaning of life? This is the question that is guiding my search. This search led me to interview Tricia. Tricia describes herself as a mom of seven, with six living children, as a w...

'¡Viva Mexico!'

Welcome to my first action project (AP) for Unit 1 of my senior Journalism class. In this class, we learned about news literacy and how to identify if a news source is credible. We watched the movie spotlight to learn about what a journalist does when investigating a source. We also talked with Julie Wernau, a reporter at the Wall Street Journal, and learned about how we could write unbiased news pieces. To wrap up this unit we were tasked with investigating and writing a news article about something that affects our neighborhood. I chose to write my article about Mexican Independence Day which takes place annually on September 16th. This event is important to Chicago because Chicago now has the second largest population of Mexican immigrants in the United States (after Los Angeles), with around 628,000 recorded between 2014-2018, according to the Migration Policy Institute. This event is also important to my neighborhood because according to the CMAP community data snapshot, between 2...

In the first unit of my junior Humanities class "Policy," we have been discussing legislation and government policy. We looked at legislation surrounding WWI and how those policies then worked for WWII. For our field experiences, we virtually met with public defender Akio Katano and former United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. We visited the National Veterans Art Museum and looked at art made by veterans deployed during the Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan war. For class we had to read The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien to better understand the Vietnam war. For this action project, we then had the chance to choose a bill that has not been passed and write a letter to our representatives voicing our opinions on the bill. In my letter below, I have written a letter to my house of representatives to vote on a bill that I believe to be really important. Throughout this, we have to continue using rhetoric, policy, and a great argument! - - - - - - - - - - - - -  ...

An Unjust Chicago

Image
In my humanities class, "A Nations Argument", we recently finished our second unit called Antithesis. In this unit, we learned about logical fallacies, premises, and the difference between valid and sound arguments. We learned about life in the US after separating from Britain. We looked closely at the United States Constitution and how the amendments were first used in supreme court cases. We met virtually with public defender Connie Jordan, 27th ward Alderman Burnett, and 40th ward Alderman Vasquez. To end this unit, our teacher asked us all to amend an ordinance in the Chicago Municipal code that we believe is unjust. I picked Chicago's hate-crime ordinance.  Unjust Chicago Municipal Code: 8-4-085 Hate crimes.  (a) No person shall, by reason of any motive or intent relating to, or any antipathy, animosity or hostility based upon, the actual or perceived race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, ancestry, sexual orientation, active or prior military status, or m...

I Do Declare!

Image
In my Humanities class, "A Nations Argument", we recently finished our first unit called Thesis. In this class, we focused on the Declaration of Independence and the way argument constructed our nation. In our class, we watched a lecture from Yale Professor Freeman about the American revolution. We also met with Principal Ben Blair of Rodgers Park Montessori School. For this action project, we had to declare an independent study. I choose to declare an independent study about mental health awareness.  “Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Resources.” Coral Springs, 2021.  Topic:  Mental Health Introduction: I am writing this declaration to fight for a class based on the wellness and awareness of mental health. It is necessary to learn about mental health so that we can all be more compassionate and understanding of each other. Personal and Logical Evidence:  School and learning are meant to prepare students for the world and the independent choices they will have ...

In my Humanities class, Rhetoric, we recently finished our third and final unit called Unity. In this unit, we furthered our knowledge of rhetoric and the impact it can have. We studied different situations where rhetoric has been used to inspire, unite, and bring change. We then focused on rhetorical devices. We studied different passages so that we could understand how these devices get used. For example, Common Sense by Thomas Paine was a pamphlet that continuously used rhetoric to persuade independence from Great Britain to people in the Thirteen Colonies. For this AP, we had to create a piece of artwork that expresses an issue and brings together unity.  CH. "Collage." 2020. I am 17 years old and as a teenager, I can tell you that life is a mess right now. With all of life's ups and downs, it can often seem as if we are just moving through life with no real purpose or goal. In order to portray how I feel, I choose to create a collage. The words and pictures I used we...

In my Humanities class, Rhetoric, we recently finished our second unit. In this unit, we furthered our knowledge of rhetoric and the impact it can have. We studied different situations where rhetoric has been used. We focused on the literary devices used in rhetoric and how those devices have an impact on the words, their context, and the impact on the audience. We watched the vice presidential debate and studied rhetoric between now elect Vice President Kamal Harris and Vice President Mike Pence. We met with Ugo Okere, a man who was running on the ticket as a Socialist to be elected in Chicago ward 40. As a class, most of us met in-person to walk through and learn about the MLK Living Memorial in Marquette Park. To wrap up our second unit of Rhetoric, I was asked to write an Op-ed. I choose to write mine about Chicago, CPS, and the current struggles Covid-19 causes for students. In this op-ed, I included rhetoric to help appeal to the reader. I established logos by including three cit...

A Global Pandemic, Our National Epidemic

In my class called Art of Rhetoric, we studied how speech, presentation, and body language affects how people interpret a speaker. In order to make a rhetorical analysis, you must study the context, speaker, genre, occasion, and especially the audience. There are different rhetorical appeals too, that go into any rhetorical speech or situation. There are three kinds of rhetorical appeals. These are logos, which appeals to logic, ethos, appealing to the credibility of the speaker; trust, and finally pathos, which appeals to the emotions. For our Action Project, we had to create a speech for a candidate that was up for election in our government. I choose Dick Durbin because has been a senator for Illinois for some time now. He is currently up for reelection, so this video is based on how I think he should respond if someone asks him questions specific to gun violence. CH. "Rhetoric AP1." Youtube, 2020. Question: "You say you favor an “assault weapon” ban, but most murders...

The Heroes Among Us

Welcome to the final unit of Stories. Throughout this term, we looked into the hero's journey and what that means exactly. We dove into Joseph Campbell's meaning of a hero's journey and the stages that makes a hero. The stages that a hero in the movie has to go through in order to make a hero, a hero. In class, we were asked to find a fictional character to follow their journey, and point out why. Then, we were asked to find someone in our life that we consider a hero, and interview them. We interviewed and asked them their story, and labeled their journey with an explanation. Here is my last AP for Stories. We had to choose a fictional character in a movie, so I chose Stitch from the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch. I chose him because of the family issues that occurred and challenged him along the way. I wanted to look at my favorite movie character and how on a personal level, I can also relate to him. I then choose my mom as my non-fictional hero. I look up to my mom in ...

Laziness Gets You Nowhere!

In our second unit, Fables, we learned about the cultural morals and background of stories told around the world. We learned what and how symbolism and symbols are used in stories. We also learned how authors use stereotypical characteristics of animals to help readers recognize and identify a character. We learned about the different types of characters there are within a story. For this AP, we had to create our own fable. Our fables had to use animals and give them human characteristics in order to portray a certain moral. I created my own fable with some background in my life. The moral in my story is about laziness. Read my fable to find out the Tale of Kimba the Lion. The Lazy Lion CH. ¨Lion.¨ 2019 Kimba loved the sun. He adored it's warm and radiant beams of light it sent across the vast savannah he called home. He loved to bathe in the sun’s outstretched rays, reaching out to lull him back to sleep. Today was not one of those days. Kimba was then pulled out of his...

For our second FE, we visited the Field Museum and learned about the origin stories within other cultures at the museum. For our first AP, we were tasked with creating our very own etiology stories. We are doing this AP to show our understanding of etiologies and storytelling as well as proper grammar and sentence structure. I hope you enjoy my story as much as I do! CH. ¨ The Creation of Storms.¨ 2019 CH. ¨Creation of Storms.¨ 2019 In conclusion, I believe this AP went really well. I normally do not like writing, but this creative writing task I ...

We read excerpts from Michael Pollen's book called, "In Defense of Food". We learned about the difference between organic and industrial food, different ways of farming to substitute for industrial farming, and the six Ayurveda tastes which relate to nutrition. We went on Field Experiences to Whole Foods where we looked at different food labels and lastly we went to Uncommon Grounds where we talked to about urban farming. For this last Action Project, we were instructed to write a food review on a meal that was restaurant cooked and homemade. We had to describe each dish using our senses and recommend which one we like more. I decided to write my reviews on Chicken Tacos. I hope you enjoy! CH. "Is It Worth It?" 2019

Sweet Dreams

In my humanities class, we had a unit called Who Am I? This unit was focusing on truth, memory, doubts, and dreams. This project specifically focuses on doubts and dreams. We visited the Art Institute of Chicago to learn about different surrealist artists from the early 18th and 19th centuries. We interpreted their reasoning behind their art piece. We also visited the American Indian Center in Albany Park to learn about the history behind dreamcatchers, the Ojibwe, and cultural appropriation. For this action project, my teacher asked us to create a dreamcatcher that symbolizes something personal to each of us. We had to connect it back to what we learned throughout this unit. I hope you enjoy it!     CH. "Sweet Dreams, Issuu." 2019 In conclusion, I learned a lot during this AP. I learned about the Ojibwe culture around dreamcatchers and the Great Spider. As well as the theories of many psychologists. This helped me explore what within my life has he...

Respect Makes the World Go Round

My current humanities class this term is called "Who Am I?". In this class, we are focusing on philosophy. We have learned a lot about Greek philosophers like Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. We learned the basic disciplines and theories of many Greek philosophers. We also researched the events that could influence many philosophers in their way of thinking. We also had an FE guest come in and talk to us about behaviorism. Our FE guest was a professional dog trainer. She explained to us how the use of behaviorism is demonstrated through like training a dog to sit or lay down. She then put us through a game. The game was similar to a positive reward training that is commonly used to train dogs. I found this game to be a very helpful example to explain the philosophy of behaviorism. To end the first unit of "Who Am I?"; my teacher has asked that every student produce a podcast. The podcast must include what I believe and what personal experience influence...
