Oh, Fair Kate - A Sonnet

Image
In Unit 1 of Drama we looked at a play called Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare. As we read through the play we came upon some interesting questions about gender equality and how it has evolved since the Elizabethan Era to modern day times. We also looked at sonnets and how Shakespeare used iambic pentameter. For our first AP, we had to create a sonnet that was address to one of the characters in Taming of the Shrew  as well as address gender issues that where raised in the play. This was a very interesting class and AP to complete due to the global pandemic and all schools being moved to virtual and e-learning. I hope you enjoy this AP in these difficult times and stay safe! CH. "A Sonnet." WEVIDEO, Youtube. 2020 Oh, Fair Kate Katherine, at first you were such a big shrew , Speaking out against everyone around. Today, we know you were just being you. Forbidden books are books or other printed works such as essays or plays which are censored or banned by law. The practice of banning books is a form of censorship, from political, legal, religious, moral, or commercial means. Censorship refers to the examination of media including books, periodicals, plays, motion pictures, and television and radio programs for the purpose of altering or suppressing parts thought to be offensive or to be inappropriate for the consumer. Common reasons for materials being challenged include violence, racism, offensive language, sexually explicit content, and is regarded as unsuitable for the age group it is marketed towards. Kelly. ¨Camp Blackhawk.¨ 2019 Hi, my name is Cora. I have Epilepsy. I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was four years old. Ever since birth, I always had trouble with sleep because of my epilepsy. I also have anxiety that gets in the way of me doing everyday things. For example, when I was little, I would freak out if I saw swings. It got so extreme that my mom and dad had to avoid parks for a very long time. My epilepsy has also helped me meet new people. I now go to camp Blackhawk each year where I meet other kids that have epilepsy, in this camp, we zipline and go to the pool. I have met new friends and have found my voice. Even though epilepsy has changed my life with me having anxiety and not being able to sleep, it has allowed me to find myself, epilepsy and all. I am now one of the Epilepsy Foundation of Chicago Teen Advocates. TF. ¨Recording of Interview.¨ 2019 ¨Here’s the CBS Chicago interview with Bryan Anderson, the President & CEO of the Epilepsy Fo...

Drawing Lines

Image
During my three-week Civic Term course called “Drawing Lines”, we focused on trying to define what public art is. Throughout this course, I saw public art through touring different areas of Chicago such as the Downtown Loop, Pilsen, and Wicker Park. We met with people and organizations such as Nathan Mason from Chicago’s Cultural Center, Katanya from Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning , and the Chicago Public Art Group . We studied public art by becoming tour guides in the neighborhoods of Lincoln Park, Downtown Loop, Pilsen, and Wicker Park. We mapped out routes through these different areas. We watched, broke down, and discussed the movie, Style Wars. It's a movie about how graffiti writing and tagging came into existence through hip hop and break dancing influences. The biggest takeaway from this course is the work we did with Rich Alapack of " We All Live Here ". He has a mural saying his infamous phrase all throughout Chicago's 77 neighborhoods. Recently,...

The Heroes Among Us

Welcome to the final unit of Stories. Throughout this term, we looked into the hero's journey and what that means exactly. We dove into Joseph Campbell's meaning of a hero's journey and the stages that makes a hero. The stages that a hero in the movie has to go through in order to make a hero, a hero. In class, we were asked to find a fictional character to follow their journey, and point out why. Then, we were asked to find someone in our life that we consider a hero, and interview them. We interviewed and asked them their story, and labeled their journey with an explanation. Here is my last AP for Stories. We had to choose a fictional character in a movie, so I chose Stitch from the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch. I chose him because of the family issues that occurred and challenged him along the way. I wanted to look at my favorite movie character and how on a personal level, I can also relate to him. I then choose my mom as my non-fictional hero. I look up to my mom in ...

Dogs & a Water Park

This is an action project for my STEAM class called Population. Unit 2 of my Population class was called "From/To". In this unit, we focused on Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution, Natural Selection, and organisms' ability to adapt to their environments. We have been learning the difference between mutation, natural selection, variation, and evolution. We have been trying to incorporate this into the real world and how it can affect the animals we know today. We have also been learning about the mean, median, and mode along with the first quartile, third quartile, and the IQR. For this Action Project, my class was supposed to find around twenty cats and dogs. We then collected their weights and approximate heights and put them into a spreadsheet. After that, we were each assigned a random group of cats or dogs and an environment that would be their new home. With our new groups and environment, we were supposed to predict which traits would help our animals would ...
