Oh, Fair Kate - A Sonnet
In Unit 1 of Drama we looked at a play called Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare. As we read through the play we came upon some interesting questions about gender equality and how it has evolved since the Elizabethan Era to modern day times. We also looked at sonnets and how Shakespeare used iambic pentameter. For our first AP, we had to create a sonnet that was address to one of the characters in Taming of the Shrew as well as address gender issues that where raised in the play. This was a very interesting class and AP to complete due to the global pandemic and all schools being moved to virtual and e-learning. I hope you enjoy this AP in these difficult times and stay safe!

Katherine, at first you were such a big shrew,
Speaking out against everyone around.
Today, we know you were just being you.
Back then they just told you to settle down.
Now when you say, “Thy husband is thy lord.”
Was it because your husband had tamed you,
Or was it because you have been ignored.
For that is what they did to women too.
Words you spoke were irreverent and prate,
You were in obedience to your lord.
You must choose to stay headstrong my good Kate.
You must choose to use your words, as a sword
For you will not be bid on by a man,
For you did not want to give away, your hand.
