Its a Garden!

Currently, in my STEAM class, we are having a class called Food. Within the first unit of this class, we focused on agriculture, plants, and soil. We had to learn about the macro and micronutrients that all plants need in order to survive. We learned about the importance of the nitrogen cycle, along with the reasons for any farmer to follow the four principles of Fukuoka. We visited an urban farm that is located near my school called Patchworks Farms.

We learned about the advantages and difficulties of creating a farm in an urban environment. We also visited a catering company called Big Delicious Planet Catering, this company grows some of its produce on site. We learned about the techniques this company used in order to create their garden. We completed this project to help show all of the information we have learned throughout our first unit. In my class we had to plan a garden, I hope you enjoy what I have put together!

I would most likely use recycled materials and reuse them to create my garden. In total, I would have six garden beds. Two of the bins will be made out of repurposed wood, two of the bins will be made out of old tractor tires, the last two bins will be made out of repurposed cylinder blocks. I will need a total of 38.5' ³ of soil in order to fill all of the containers.

I am choosing to plant the below plants together as companion plants:
  • Tomatoes -  Planting tomatoes near basil can help keep the flies and mosquitos away.
  • Marigolds -  Certain marigold varieties control nematodes.
  • Catnip - Catnip reduces flea-beetles
  • Beans - Marigolds, nasturtium, and rosemary all can deter beetles that may harm beans.
  • Carrots -  Chives can help improve the flavor of carrots if the two are planted near each other.
  • Asparagus -  Plant asparagus near basil, parsley or tomatoes.
  • Lettuce -  Plant lettuce near beets, cabbage, carrots, onions, radishes or strawberries to help keep aphids away.
  • Peppers -  Plant peppers near tomatoes, eggplant, carrots, and onions.
  • Spinach -  Planting radishes will draw leafminers away from other plants, radishes will not be harmed because radishes are mainly grown undergrown.
  • Chives -  Garlic chive flowers are said to repel rose pests.
To make sure that I won't have any pests, I will use an organic pesticide. I will also use an organic herbicide to make sure that weeds don't grow up within the garden beds. I will also use organic fertilizers to help improve the soil and return nutrients to the soil.

CH. "Companion Plants." 2019

In conclusion, in order to create my urban garden, I should create a garden that will not create a lot of waste. As well as planting plants that will support each other on a level I wouldn't be able to unless I used harmful inorganic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides.
