The Heroes Among Us

Welcome to the final unit of Stories. Throughout this term, we looked into the hero's journey and what that means exactly. We dove into Joseph Campbell's meaning of a hero's journey and the stages that makes a hero. The stages that a hero in the movie has to go through in order to make a hero, a hero. In class, we were asked to find a fictional character to follow their journey, and point out why. Then, we were asked to find someone in our life that we consider a hero, and interview them. We interviewed and asked them their story, and labeled their journey with an explanation. Here is my last AP for Stories. We had to choose a fictional character in a movie, so I chose Stitch from the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch. I chose him because of the family issues that occurred and challenged him along the way. I wanted to look at my favorite movie character and how on a personal level, I can also relate to him. I then choose my mom as my non-fictional hero. I look up to my mom in ...

Dogs & a Water Park

This is an action project for my STEAM class called Population. Unit 2 of my Population class was called "From/To". In this unit, we focused on Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution, Natural Selection, and organisms' ability to adapt to their environments. We have been learning the difference between mutation, natural selection, variation, and evolution. We have been trying to incorporate this into the real world and how it can affect the animals we know today. We have also been learning about the mean, median, and mode along with the first quartile, third quartile, and the IQR. For this Action Project, my class was supposed to find around twenty cats and dogs. We then collected their weights and approximate heights and put them into a spreadsheet. After that, we were each assigned a random group of cats or dogs and an environment that would be their new home. With our new groups and environment, we were supposed to predict which traits would help our animals would ...

In our second unit, Fables, we learned about the cultural morals and background of stories told around the world. We learned what and how symbolism and symbols are used in stories. We also learned how authors use stereotypical characteristics of animals to help readers recognize and identify a character. We learned about the different types of characters there are within a story. For this AP, we had to create our own fable. Our fables had to use animals and give them human characteristics in order to portray a certain moral. I created my own fable with some background in my life. The moral in my story is about laziness. Read my fable to find out the Tale of Kimba the Lion. The Lazy Lion CH. ¨Lion.¨ 2019 Kimba loved the sun. He adored it's warm and radiant beams of light it sent across the vast savannah he called home. He loved to bathe in the sun’s outstretched rays, reaching out to lull him back to sleep. Today was not one of those days. Kimba was then pulled out of his...

We also had our first FE where storyteller came to talk to us about descriptive writing and how we could better our AP's through storytelling. For our second FE, we visited the Field Museum and learned about the origin stories within other cultures at the museum. For our first AP, we were tasked with creating our very own etiology stories. We are doing this AP to show our understanding of etiologies and storytelling as well as proper grammar and sentence structure. I hope you enjoy my story as much as I do! CH. ¨ The Creation of Storms.¨ 2019 CH. ¨Creation of Storms.¨ 2019 In conclusion, I believe this AP went really well. I normally do not like writing, but this creative writing task I ...

Hello! For the first STEAM class of the year, Population, we learned about taxonomy, set theory, quadrilaterals, and biology. To prepare for this class over the summer we read In the Shadow of Man by Jane Goodall.  We also went on our first FE to the Lincoln Park Zoo where we chose the animal we would study for our AP. We then continued to study our animal by visiting the  Field Museum to observe the taxidermy animal we had chosen. For our AP we had to create a project explaining the taxonomy of the animal of choice. I chose Hoffman's two-toed sloth because I think sloths are really interesting. In the project, you will read about Hoffman's two-toed sloth, its habitat, taxonomic categories, and the morphological traits that show the taxonomic categories. You will also learn about set theory and how my animal compares to other animals my classmates have chosen. I hope you enjoy it! CH. "Slowly Sloth." 2019, Issuu CH. ¨Sloth GIF.¨ 2019 In conclusion, I reall...

We read excerpts from Michael Pollen's book called, "In Defense of Food". We learned about the difference between organic and industrial food, different ways of farming to substitute for industrial farming, and the six Ayurveda tastes which relate to nutrition. We went on Field Experiences to Whole Foods where we looked at different food labels and lastly we went to Uncommon Grounds where we talked to about urban farming. For this last Action Project, we were instructed to write a food review on a meal that was restaurant cooked and homemade. We had to describe each dish using our senses and recommend which one we like more. I decided to write my reviews on Chicken Tacos. I hope you enjoy! CH. "Is It Worth It?" 2019
