Blume. "Book Cover." 1970. This is an action project for my core class Forbidden Books. In this unit we have been learning about diversity, gender roles, and studied the banning of books. For our action project we had to create a research paper that outlined why the books where banned, who banned it, and then we had to take a stance on the book and discuss whether we thought the book should or  should not be banned. The banned book I choose was Are You There God? It's Me Margaret. by Judy Blume. I hope you enjoy hearing my stance on this book and enjoy reading my research paper!  CH. "Research Paper." 2020.

The 20/20 on COVID-19

In my STEAM course called Disease we recently finished our third unit called “World”. In this unit we focused on the spread of diseases. We studied the different classifications of diseases. We focused on the different aspects that are considered when a disease is affecting a community. We studied how epidemics affect the world. We also learned different key concepts epidemiologists use regarding the spread of diseases. For this AP we were instructed to pick a disease of our interest. We then had to study a particular outbreak of this disease from the past. The purpose of this project is to create a newspaper article that informs readers about the outbreak we chose. The article explains what caused the outbreak, how the outbreak was controlled, and what we can do to avoid an outbreak like it from happening again. This AP led me to learn a lot about disease that is current in our world today, COVID-19. Currently we are facing a pandemic. I found it really interesting that I had the oppo...

Take the Money - Bennie

In our class Drama, we read the play, A Raisin in the Sun. This play examined gender roles, as well as the way race played a role in our society in the past and in the current day. We also had virtual FE guests Regina Holloway and Joel Hamernick come and speak to us about restrictive covenants in Chicago and how specific laws were put in place to keep black families out of white neighborhoods.  In the play, Mama has bought a new house in an all white neighborhood. Mr. Linder, the "welcoming committee" from this neighborhood is trying to get the Younger family to sell the house back to the community. For our action project, I have written a letter to Walter Younger to convince him on whether he should or should not sell the house to Mr. Linder. I decided to write the letter from the view of Beneatha. This letter is directed to Walter who has the final decision of whether the house is sold or not. I hope this letter can show you why Walter should sell the house to Mr. Linder.  ...

Me and my ADHD

Image
Welcome to my second action project for Disease. We just wrapped up our second unit called Mind. In Mind, we looked at the brain and focused different parts of the brain. Our main resource was the DMX-V file which is a textbook that has a long list of mental illnesses, including their symptoms. This book is often used by medical professionals when studying mental illnesses. In this unit, we looked into different mental illnesses specially autism and we chose one that we wanted to research on our own. We looked deeply into autism and read a book by Naoki Nigashida called, The Reason I Jump. I chose to research attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). I made a simulation and did a lot of research on what it's like to live with ADHD. ADHD The scientific definition for ADHD is, "ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by impairing levels of inattention, disorganization, and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity." My definition is that someone with ADHD has "differen...

Patient B

In my STEAM class, Cure, this has definitely been an interesting unit to learn through e-learning. We studied the Hippocratic oath and the difference between a doctor and a healer. We learned about cell's, mitosis and meiosis, and practiced conic sections. We took virtual FE's and spoke with Dr. Neeraj Jain, a doctor who specializes in pain medicine at Hinsdale hospital. As well as Kellee Athens, who is very knowledgeable about the Zika Pandemic. For this AP we were tasked with choosing a surgery and studying it very thoroughly. We had to explain a person that had has had this surgery performed, and how there organs, tissues, and cells were affected by the surgery. I choose a Hip Arthroscopy because it is a procedure were I have easy access many things that I could use as my primary sources. I believe that is what makes this project and this procedure super interesting. CH. "Slideshow." 2020 In conclusion, this was definitely both a challenging and interesting project...

Oh, Fair Kate - A Sonnet

In Unit 1 of Drama we looked at a play called Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare. As we read through the play we came upon some interesting questions about gender equality and how it has evolved since the Elizabethan Era to modern day times. We also looked at sonnets and how Shakespeare used iambic pentameter. For our first AP, we had to create a sonnet that was address to one of the characters in Taming of the Shrew  as well as address gender issues that where raised in the play. This was a very interesting class and AP to complete due to the global pandemic and all schools being moved to virtual and e-learning. I hope you enjoy this AP in these difficult times and stay safe! CH. "A Sonnet." WEVIDEO, Youtube. 2020 Oh, Fair Kate Katherine, at first you were such a big shrew , Speaking out against everyone around. Today, we know you were just being you. Back then they just told you to settle down. Now when you say, “Thy husband is thy lord.” Was it because yo...

Forbidden books are books or other printed works such as essays or plays which are censored or banned by law. The practice of banning books is a form of censorship, from political, legal, religious, moral, or commercial means. Censorship refers to the examination of media including books, periodicals, plays, motion pictures, and television and radio programs for the purpose of altering or suppressing parts thought to be offensive or to be inappropriate for the consumer. Common reasons for materials being challenged include violence, racism, offensive language, sexually explicit content, and is regarded as unsuitable for the age group it is marketed towards. Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy. He is considered the father of western philosophy. Plato was his most famous student and would teach Aristotle, Aristotle would then go on and tutor Alexander the Great. The Socratic dialogue is a form of a cooperative argumentative d...
