'¡Viva Mexico!'

Welcome to my first action project (AP) for Unit 1 of my senior Journalism class. In this class, we learned about news literacy and how to identify if a news source is credible. We watched the movie spotlight to learn about what a journalist does when investigating a source. We also talked with Julie Wernau, a reporter at the Wall Street Journal, and learned about how we could write unbiased news pieces. To wrap up this unit we were tasked with investigating and writing a news article about something that affects our neighborhood. I chose to write my article about Mexican Independence Day which takes place annually on September 16th. This event is important to Chicago because Chicago now has the second largest population of Mexican immigrants in the United States (after Los Angeles), with around 628,000 recorded between 2014-2018, according to the Migration Policy Institute. This event is also important to my neighborhood because according to the CMAP community data snapshot, between 2...

Designing a "good classroom"

Image
Hello!  For my 2021 student orientation, we had to design a classroom within our school building. In our internal investigation, we learned about the history of classrooms in the US and explored what we thought made up a good classroom and learning environment. For our external investigation, we learned about different types of classrooms and visited a soundscape experience in Millennium Park to experience what made an outdoor place a productive learning space. Now to wrap up this orientation, we are tasked with designing and executing a plan for our assigned classroom that follows both COVID protocols and our group set standards of a “good classroom”. CH. "Cabin Blueprint." 2021. My group was assigned the Cabin. My group thought that it would be best to arrange our tables in a horseshoe. We did this so that everyone could see the whiteboard, speaker, and each other. We made sure to distance each chair at least 3ft apart. We also placed chairs in each desk that is built into ...

The history of Tex-Mex

Whats in your back yard?

In the third unit of my junior STEAM class "Urban Planning," we spent the past couple of weeks learning about sustainable design. In this class, we talked about different local and global community design projects. We looked at many community designs from across history. My favorite places that I researched design were Oak Park and Austin township. I enjoyed learning about these different communities and how their housing design and transit design changed over time and what factors contributed to those changes. While researching during our internal investigation, we viewed and listened to James Kunstler’s, Majora Carter’s, and Ellen Dunham-Jones' Ted Talks. They all presented 3 different subjects on communities and cities. These subjects talked about the architecture of cities and how it’s gotten lazy, the inequality and segregation created by designs of some communities, and how we can fix these issues with concepts such as retrofitting. There were also other terms my cl...

Urgent: American Epidemic

In the first unit of my junior Humanities class "Policy," we have been discussing legislation and government policy. We looked at legislation surrounding WWI and how those policies then worked for WWII. For our field experiences, we virtually met with public defender Akio Katano and former United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. We visited the National Veterans Art Museum and looked at art made by veterans deployed during the Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan war. For class we had to read The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien to better understand the Vietnam war. For this action project, we then had the chance to choose a bill that has not been passed and write a letter to our representatives voicing our opinions on the bill. In my letter below, I have written a letter to my house of representatives to vote on a bill that I believe to be really important. Throughout this, we have to continue using rhetoric, policy, and a great argument! - - - - - - - - - - - - -  ...

AC/DC (no, not the band)

In the second unit of my junior STEAM class "Urban Planning," we spent the past couple of weeks learning about energy. In this unit, we learned about the War of Currents, AC/ DC energy, circuits, and Ohm’s law. For our FE, we met virtually with guests from Farr Associates. We learned about sustainable and energy-efficient architecture. For this action project, we had to create a circuit using 1 main switch and at least 1 parallel branch switch. We then have to calculate the voltage and current running through the circuit and estimate how much energy could be saved with our energy-efficient design.  CH. "circuit model and frame." 2021. Lightbulb 1 would represent the power to the entire room. Lightbulb 2 would represent a coffee machine. Lightbulb 3 would represent the dishwasher. Lightbulb 4 would represent the ceiling fan and light in the room. Lightbulb 1 and 4 will always turn on at the same time because they are part of the same branch. You can turn on and off l...

Trust the Trusses

This is the first Action Project (AP) for my STEAM class Urban Planning. In this first unit, we learned about the law of sines and cosines, the 7 ancient wonders of the world, free body diagrams, bridges, gravity, and Newton's Laws. For this unit's field experience, our teacher walked around downtown Chicago and showed our class the DuSable bridge, the river walk, and lower wacker virtually. For this AP, we were tasked with making truss bridges with a maximum of 60 popsicle sticks and a bottle of Elmer's Glue. One struggle I had with this project was getting the two truss sides of the bridge to stay together. To fix this I had to think of creative ways to keep my bridge up while I glued them together. CH. "Slideshow." Google Slides, 2021.
